WEEK 17 OF THE SOFTBALL COACH
THIS WAS MORE THAN JUST A WEEK OF COACHING
THE CANBERRA DIAMONDS HAVE HAD A WEEK OF GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS.
As the Diamonds are just 3 weeks away from their first big softball test, our Sunday training was not a good day to begin with. Only 7 degrees, cold and windy with an odd shower, and then our first baseman tells me that her knee is not responding to treatment, and that she would be out for two months, which is basically the season. There goes our only lefthander and a very good hitter. We also got another scare as our rookie right fielder came charging in for a fly ball, unfortunatly the 2nd base thought she had the ball. It is the outfielders dutie to call for the ball and when this didn't happen, there was a sickening collisson. After getting her wind back, it was off to the hospital for x-rays. Thankfully it was just bad bruising.
The best part of the day came when we played the U/19 boys in a game. They were maybe stronger and faster, but our girls played exceptionally well, and it was so satisfying to see them pull off some plays, that we worked so hard to perfect in practice. The game ended up 4-2 but we left the park very satisfied with our performance. We try to finish our trainings by lunch, because we have one dedicated player who is a school teacher and drives 6 hours each way, to train and play on the week end. Our pitchers and catchers did a lot of extra pitching and throwing on tuesday night, and i'am very confident heading into the season with there ability.
On friday night our u/13 and u/15 pitchers had just started there beginners pitching session when the rain settled in for the night. Talk about dissappointment, every boy wanted to stay and pitch but i explained to them, safety comes first at all costs. It will give them something to look forward to this friday night, as they all want to pitch in the aussie's got talent tournament in two weeks time. The rain held off sunday but came back monday and cancelled our mens games.
As i said this was more than just a week of coaching, it is two weeks away until the biggest mens softball tournament in the Southern Hemisphere is upon us. Yes its the famous Canberra Skins, a tournament that has been run for 25 years. It is where all our players, try to be seen to make the national squad, another job i am really looking forward to, as this is where the preperation begins for the final team for the world championships.
I have had a few long nights or short days, as i prepare the schedule for the 17 A and B grade teams that will descend upon us. Then we have 28 umpires who need to be accomodated and fed for the week end. You wouldn't do this if you didn't love the sport, but i see it as a way of helping others.
See you next week when our base paths cross and hope you like my selection of pitchers for this week.
