MY TOWN QUEANBEYAN CELEBRATES 175 YEARS A DAY TO REMEMBER AND REFLECT BACK ON WHAT OUR ANCESTORS DISCOVERED AND THE HARDSHIPS THEY ENCOUNTERED ALONG THERE JOURNEYS What a great day for a 175 year old town, the sun was shining, the winds were very strong and a lot of people could be seen scurring for their hats. Everyone loves a parade, and this day was no exception as 5000 people lined the first street of Queanbeyan, to watch this historical event. I arrived an hour early to get a good spot to see, but I discovered so many other things on the history of that street, that I will be able to write two or three stories.

SWOOPING SEASON IS HERE WHAT IS SWOOPING SEASON? IN AUSTRALIA THIS SEASON STARTS IN SEPTEMBER AND ENDS IN OCTOBER Swooping season can cause some anxious and scary moments, amongst our children, and yes even adults. Its the time of year where we see people walking, with a branch over their head, or eyes painted on the back of bicyle helmets, or sewn on to a hat. It is funny to see children walking from school one going forward and the other one walking backwards. It is not so funny to see children and unsuspecting adults fall off their bicyles. Yes it is the time of year, where our magpies start to nest, and hatch there young. They nest high up in our gum trees, and the male bird does not like anyone who passes near or under that tree. AUSSIE BOB'S WEEK OF SOFTBALL COACHING I have had one of the most rewarding week as a coach. I was asked if i would help mentor 3 boy's aged 14 from Singapore to help with their pitching and catching skills. Softball plays a big part in there School sports program. They come from the prestigous Raffles college and must be highly accademic to go to school there. They must choose a sport to play and then they play in the best school's competition i have seen. The boy's arrived on Friday the 28th of May and were very excited on there way to Canberra. After a 2hr car journey from Sydney they started to realize what a change in temperature as it was 31c when they left Singapore and to arrive in canberra to 7c. It was not only cold but rained for the next two days. Monday morning what a day for excitement. The boys got up to see their first ever frost and to think we put hot water on our windshield to get rid of the ice. They were sure busy taking pictures and pulling there beanies down over their ears. When we left for the softball park their eyes couldn't imagin all the kangaroo's they saw. My only thoughts were how are they going to cope with this weather and pitch softball. As usual after a frost we have a beautiful sunny day and by midday it was a high of 15c. Our warmups started at 10am and after a half hour i was ready to check there skill level of pitching and catching. We started with an accuracy

AUSSIE BOB WEEK THREE OF SOFTBALL COACHING This week has went by so fast. In fact i am sure i must of missed something as there were so many events happening. One thing that i wish i could miss are the minus 3 evenings out on the frosty softball fields. I know the players are quite alive when they hit a pitched ball and the bat jars there hands. I did not realize what colourful language both boys and girls can use. Monday night was our AGM for our mens fast pitch softball league. This league has been running for 25 yrs now. It is the most sucessful league in Australia softball. Programs for our junior and senior teams were outlined for the up coming season which will start in Oct and end in march. Tuesday was accademy night for our select players men and women. Our girl's leave for California USA today june 25 where they will represent australia in our U/17 development program. What an opportunity for those young players to look forward to, who knows some of them may end back up in USA on a college softball scholarship. The rain came wednesday and was a relief as we not only needed the rain but gave me a day away from the ball park. It gave me time to catch up on coach evaluations, and prepare for our state coach's meeting saturday morning.

AUSSIE RULES AND IT DOES I WENT TO WATCH MY GRANDSON PLAY IN THE GRAND FINAL OF AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL FOR HIS SCHOOL What is aussie rules football? Since coming to this country i have watched many games. My wife Sue and I ran the bistro at football park over 20 years ago so had lots of opportunity to see this game played. I watched my fist game in Melbourne the basic home of Aussie Rules in 1986. I DID NOT REMEMBER MUCH ABOUT THE GAME, BUT I DO REMEMBER THE UMPIRES WERE ESCORTED OUT TO THE CENTRE OF THE FIELD BY 4 RIDERS ON HORSE BACK. The reason i do not remember much about the game, was that i couldn't get over the size of the field, and the 80,000 spectators watching the game. The colors, the cheering and sledging amongst the fans, was what i remember the game by.

CANBERRAS KANGA CUP POSSIBLY BIGGEST SOCCER TOURNAMENT IN WORLD i have spent the last four days watching my grandson play soccer. I did not realize how big this tournament is till i did some serious research on this event. The Kanga Cup started in 1991 with 31 teams. This event is now so big it covers 10 venues with 6 - 10 soccer fields at each venue. The tournament starts on a Sunday and ends on a Friday at the Australian Institute of Sport Fields. What a thrill for these players. The competition is for both boys and girls and in age brackets from u/13 u/15 u/18. Would you believe 234 teams entered this year and each team plays 6 games.THATS FOUR THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED AND EIGHTY PLAYERS AND OFFICALS. There are five hundred volunteers that run canteens, sell souviners

WEEK OF THE SOFTBALL COACH EIGHT D'S OF COACHING AND HOW I RELATE IT TO FAN BOX This week has been a very relaxed week. School holidays and lots of rain brought softball to standstill, so no coaching outdoors. Spent week following our many players who play for teams in Canada and USA. Our Aussie Spirit women's team played in Oklahoma, in the USA Cup then travel to Vancouver to play in the Canada Cup. Japan is the team to beat in womens softball as they have the best womens pitcher in the world. After coaching for fifty years i thought these principles that i used can be compared to the principles of Fan Box. MY 8 D'S OF COACHING DESIRE: If i did not have the desire and ambition i would not be coaching after fifty years. Passion takes on a new meaning when you put this many years in. Like Fan Box if you don't have the passion and believe, or the desire to keep learning your success will be guided by your earnings. DEDICATION: This not only involve's mysef but my family as well. They dedicate time to fit around your purpose. You have to give up many things in life because if you don't have the dedication you not only let yourself down, but your team as well. Fan Box is the same if we don't dedicate ourselve's we don't learn, and as a result don't earn. We also let our coach's down who spend so much time helping us. Think of the dedication it took to get Fan Box to where it is today. Insome cases it can affect your family and even work, our founders can easily relate to this. DISCILPLIN: This to me is the most important D. Over the years i saw many good ball teams lose because they didn't have the disciplin to play as a team, or in some cases it involved coach's and even parents. Disciplin comes from the culture, and program you provide. Fan Box is the same they have guide lines for success coach's and created a culture we must follow. If we want to bend the rules or go our own way Fan Box have the power to cancel your membership. Disciplin is a must and Fan Box you have provided a good platform.

EPISODE FIVE:WEEK OF THE COACH IT IS TIME TO REVIEW OUR AUSSIE SPIRIT WOMEN'S SOFTBALL PROGRAM. Aussie Spirit have just returned from Canada where they took part in the Canada International Softball Cup. They came home with a silver medal their best result in the past six years To do this they defeated the powerful USA Team 2-1 in extra innings then went down to the World Champions Japan 2-0 in extra innings. This leaves our team with a positive attitude heading into the next World Championship which will be held in 2014. This is their highest finish in six years, i can say that its a pleasure to be involved in their program for the last four years. What has been the turn a round to their success. First of all you need DEDICATED coachs and admin staff who are prepared to put a program in place and follow it through. How did we find the program that suited Australia. First and foremost we looked at the top teams in the world. Japan who dethroned USA as world champions, China and Canada. Comparing those countries there were two notable differences one they have a massive difference in numbers to choose from or had a college scholorship or a professional league to play in. One thing we all had in common you could only play nine players on the field at once. We looked at the mens program very little funding and world class. How did

WEEK SIX OF THE SOFTBALL COACH NEW SEASON COMING UP FIRST TRAINING OVER After having a relaxed few weeks doing mostly administration and programs for different age groups, our first practice and evaluation of our Canberra Diamonds took place. It was a very cold day in Canberra so the full evaluation assessment was put off for three weeks. As a coach your first priority is duty of care for your atheletes. The ladies had not been doing a lot of throwing so selectors and coaches decided to call that segment of training off. In all we had twenty three ladies turnup and seven more were away playing other sports, and one player is in Italy playing in their summer softball league. These players will make up our u/19 team and will combine with our senior players to make the Canberra Diamonds. The Diamonds play in the National League called the Gilleys Shield and will play an eighteen game schedule starting in New Zealand on December 12th. All the girls get extra games as they play for their club teams in our local competition. I met with all the girls and went through what our season would consist of. Training nights are hard to suit everyone, as all the ladies have jobs and no one gets paid for playing softball. In fact when doing a budget for travel and accomodation plus add local fees, buying your own uniform it will cost each player close to $3000.00 dollars. When you add costs of petrol and taking leave to play it can be very costly.

The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no buisness at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to be in Cambridge. 'We,d like to see the president,' the man said softly. 'He'll be busy all day,' the secretary snapped. 'We'll wait,' the ladie replied.

WEEK NINE LIFE OF SOFTBALL COACH This week faced some new challenges but on the world stage our Aussie Steeler Squad boys sure made the world take notice. In what is considered the best team tournament in the World International softball Congress which was held in Quad City Iowa. Our Aussie boys swept all the awards Adam Folkard best pitcher, Nick Shailes most valuable player and Harrison Peters a pitcher named as player of the future. This is when you get self satisfaction as a coach. Having worked with these players they are very deserving of these awards and this is when a coach gets self satisfaction.

OLDEST BUILDING STILL STANDS AS QUEANBEYAN CELEBRATED 175 YEARS I WAS AMAZED AT THE HISTORY OF ITS OLDEST BUILDING I have drove past this building many times, but never understood the signifigance of it, until the parade came down the first street, that signified the beginning of Queanbeyan. A white rendered building, with a verandah long gone it looks like an apartment building in todays society. A man by the name of William Hunt, who had a licensed premises, had a vision of a big boom in the frontier township, decided to build a more grandoise inn next to his licensed premises. This was no ordinary inn, and the inside to this day shows how elegant it was. The building was completed in 1849, and towered above any strutures on this side of the river. The building was called "The Olde Kent Hotel." This two- story edifice was equipped with a spacious ballroom, a large stonewalled cellar, a wooden staircase and many large rooms. An ornate wooden balconette led from the ballroom on the upper floor through french doors looking up the Queanbeyan river. The place used for a court house, in Irish town was deemed unsuitable and The olde Kent Hotel which still did not have a license, became the Queanbeyan court house, the upper floor constituting the magistrates rooms, whilst the ground floor became the lock up. You must remember near all the early settlers were convicts shipped from England. A permanent court house was built, and in 1859 the building was used as a church for both Presbyterians, and Anglicans. William Hunt passed away in 1879, not living to see his grand building licensed. It was not until 1884 that the hotel was able to sell alcoholic spirits. When the railway was being built, the hotel was used as a temporary hospital for the railway employees and had its own medical officer.

In March, a team of scientists and filmmakers joined the ranks of the few human visitors to the misty rain forest atop the Melville Range, a small mountain range on Cape Melville, part of northeastern Australia's Cape York Peninsula (map). Tropical biologist Conrad Hoskin, an expert in frog and reptiles at Australia's James Cook University, has long been interested in the area: "I've explored a lot of spots, and Cape Melville always stood out as that place," he said. WHAT DO YOU SAY MY FRIEND HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER FOR THE 2ND TIME THREE TO SIX MONTHS TO LIVE What words can you say to someone and especially a friend, who would give his heart and soul to help anyone. Yes less than a year ago my robust and healthy friend who didn't drink or smoke, but could eat with the best of us, was called in by the Doctor and told his tests showed tumors in the stomach and they were cancerous. You will be operated on tomorrow, and we will remove the tumours. What they didn't tell him was the only way they could remove all the tumours, was to completely remove his stomach. After this severe operation and getting use to his new plastic stomach, and facing new eating habits, his life looked like returning to normal with restrictions. His wife and two girls had smiles on their faces for the first time in months. The doctors were so sure all the cancer was removed, he did not have to take chemotherapy or radiation. In the process he lost 30 kilos, can't eat meat, and eats small amounts 6 or 7 times per day. Then the bombshell came. After going in for a routine check 6 weeks ago the Doctors said the cancer is all through your body and it is spreading rapidly. Even with chemotherapy and radiation we can say you have 3 to 6 months to live. Now is when reality and emotions take over all at the same time. As he explained to me i am only 47 years old, i just moved my wife and two daughters into our new home, what changes do i have to make. First

My rural school had 29 students and to get enough players to make a softball team, we would have players from year 1-8. As we had a lot of Amish students we were restricted as they could not travel to other schools and play sports, and boy were they good softball players. When we joined forces in our small town we became a different culture and identity, which relates to the many happenings in a small town.
